Congress Manual

Participating in one of the affinity groups at each of the four core days of the congress is an offer for exchange in smaller groups (approx. 7 persons). They are suitable to free us from our filter bubble, to get to know new perspectives & to hear more about the congress from the same people every day. The allocation to an affinity group is done automatically by us with your registration. It is done through a lottery. You can use the groups for what you want: for networking, for content, personal & emotional exchange… We will give you some inspiration at the beginning.

A utopia – what does it actually look like? How can it be imagined, experienced or tested? The art and culture programme of the congress will address these questions and create spaces for creating, empathising and empowering. Desirable futures are designed in an artistic way, which should be just, ecological and feasible. Events take place both online and on site in Leipzig.

The term “awareness” refers “to being aware, to informing oneself, to be sensitized to certain problems”. In general, it means a respectful and attentive interaction with each other. At the congress “Future for All”, people with the most diverse social positions, diverse experiences and opinions will meet. We are pleased about this diversity and this common learning space.

At the same time, we live in a society that is unfortunately characterized by unequal power relations. People are favoured (privileged) and disadvantaged (discriminated against) on the basis of certain characteristics – whether intentionally or unconsciously.

Awareness is a concept that opposes every form of discrimination, violence and violation of borders. Violating and border-crossing behaviour, such as sexist, racist, homo-, transphobic, ablist or comparable assaults*, will not be tolerated. Those affected are empowered and actively supported in developing their own strategies for dealing with discrimination.

“The Future” is your social-space outside the official workshops and during the congress also the pub, where you can meet, discuss and get to know each other in the evening. The bar has its own rules and rooms (link to the KG-page) and runs outside the official venueless platform. In this sense: See you in the future!

BBB is our video conferencing system and integrated into our online platform (–> venueless). All interactive online workshops take place on this platform. Detailed instructions and tips for fruitful video conferences can be found on our congress site (–> congress site, digital) at the Tech Support.

Big Blue Button rooms can be divided into breakout rooms to allow small groups and interpretation.

Based on these results we organized this congress and wrote the book “Future for All – a vision for 2048”. It will be published in October by oekom under Open Access and can already be pre-ordered (in German only, so far…).

In order for the interpretation of the workshops (—> interpreting, BBB & interpreting, streams) to work according to our instructions, we recommend you to download Firefox. Alternatively you can download the Chrome and Chromium extension “Mute Tab Shortcuts” and mute individual tabs with Alt + Shift + M. 

There are chat rooms both in Big Blue Button and on the online platform venueless. Please use the Big Blue Button chat rooms during events for questions and short comments as well as approval with plus sign + and rejection with minus sign -, and according to the requests of the speakers / moderators. Use an asterisk * to ask for your right to speak. We ask you not to open extra discussions in these chats, but to herefore use the content chat rooms venueless and the private chats BBB venueless. Please contact the tech host if you have problems using them during an event.

Together with all participants of the congress, we would like to openly address discrimination and border-crossing and resolutely oppose such behaviour. There is a sensitized awareness team at the congress. In order to come closer to our goal of a liberated society, however, it is necessary that each individual takes responsibility. Only in the joint confrontation with power relations can we counteract, change and dismantle them.

The congress Future for All is based on self-organisation. For this to work well, the active participation of everyone is necessary. Tasks that arise range from serving food and cleaning toilets to material handling and technical support. For most tasks no previous knowledge is required. We wish us to distribute care work in a gender-equitable way.

The digital congress site is made up of a multitude of building blocks. On the one hand, we would like to provide the opportunity for orientation on the congress site. On the other hand, we want to restrict the imagination as little as possible for the congress. That’s why we have deliberately kept the site as a secluded area.

For BIPoC and FLINT*-People° we offer exclusive online rooms where you can meet and network. BIPoC stands for Black Indigenous and People of Color, FLINT* for women, lesbians, inter-, non-binary, trans- and queer people.

You will need a digital device to participate in the congress. Ideally a computer (PC) with a camera – small screens can make the operation of the online platform and the chats confusing. Please check your technical equipment before the start of the event: Do the microphone, speakers and camera work? Mute your microphone during the event if you are not speaking. Activate your camera only at low quality to ensure that little bandwidth is used and the terminals of the other congress participants are not overloaded. 

The digital place where participants can get to know the partners of the congress and exchange ideas with them. It will take place from 26 to 29 August from 17.00 to 18.30 hrs. The partner organisations of the congress are in charge of a video room, which works similar to an analogue stand: Participants come by if they are interested in learning more about the work of a particular organisation and are provided with information material, e.g. in the form of digital flyers or brochures, by a contact person. 

All podiums, the conference opening and closing as well as the morning openings are open to the public. You do not need to register with the congress or the website unless you want to ask questions and actively participate in discussions.

Some workshops are interpreted, some have whispered translation. If you want to listen to the interpretation, choose the appropriate breakout room. A second tab will open where you have to unlock your audio authorization again. Return to the main room, there you can unlock your video and audio (if you want to speak during the workshop). Mute the main room of the Big Blue Button Session by right-clicking on your browser tab and selecting “Mute this tab”.

For the interpretation of our streams we have integrated a player on the –> digital congress site. Select the appropriate language and mute the tab where you watch the stream by right-clicking on your browser tab and selecting “Mute this tab” (shortcut Ctrl + M for Firefox) (–> browser recommendation).

An important aim of the congress is that people from different initiatives and social movements should network, identify common themes and fields of action and thus create possible cross-thematic cooperation. Because we believe that social-ecological transformation is more than just the individual social movements working side by side. Some networking formats are already included in the programme. If you would like to exchange ideas with other groups, get to know  others or make plans, use the daily Open Space and register your event during the congress. At the congress it is important to keep an eye on one’s own strengths and limits. It is also important to create sufficient space for reflection. Online tires you out faster than physical meetings and concentration decreases faster.

So here are a few tips for good self-care:

• It can happen that another person crosses your personal boundaries. We encourage you to make these limits clear. If you are not sure, we offer you our support as an awareness team.
• It makes sense to create a calm environment where everyone can feel well for the duration of the participation.
• It is important to plan enough breaks between workshops and podiums. During the events, discuss in the group how you would like to organise your breaks.
• In between, it is a good idea to get some exercise, get some fresh air and relax your mind. Sufficient food and fluids are also important.
